Winston-Salem State University. Who? Ok, WSSU doesn’t exactly come to mind when you think of college football powerhouses, but they produced a mighty fine wide receiver in Yancey Thigpen. A few years later, WSSU produced another NFL wide receiver, Oronde Gadsden. But WSSU’s list of notable sports alumni doesn’t stop there. NBA Hall of Famer Earl “the Pearl” Monroe was part of the class of 1967, and the class of 1992 included everyone’s favorite sports media personality, Stephen A. Smith. So hooray for WSSU.

In the NFL, Yancey Thigpen took a while to get going. He caught just 10 passes in his first 3 years in the league, then caught 36 balls the next year before finally breaking out in 1995 with 85 receptions for 1305 yards. He made the Pro Bowl that year, and after an injury plagued ’96 season Thigpen recovered to catch 87 balls for 1398 yards in ’97, earning him another Pro Bowl appearance. For the rest of his career Thigpen would play a less prominent role, never catching more than 38 passes in a season. He retired in 2000. (Thigpen’s career stats)

Thanks to this guy, who apparently “Google’s Yancey Thigpen like it’s his job,” we can all find out how compatible we are with Yancey. My compatibility with Yancey Thigpen is just 52%, which is a little disappointing, but understandable. According to the results, it is our physical and emotional compatibility that is bringing the rating down. Our intellectual compatibility is very high. So that’s good to know. Find out how compatible you are with Yancey Thigpen here. Feel free to share your score over in the RFP Forum.

Here’s a nice little write-up from the NY Times on Thigpen and his journey from a town “as country as country gets” all the way to NFL stardom. (Link)
